Reforestation Program

2025 Reforestation Program

The Community Services Department has completed the 2025 Reforestation Program. Those sites where a tree had been removed in the past year automatically received a letter offering a replacement tree. Factors considered when determining a viable site include adequate grow space, any interference with utility lines, sufficient site distance and traffic clearance, as well as maintenance resources, including an adequate and consistent water source. New trees will be planted between May and June 2025 to take advantage of cool weather and winter precipitation.

Every property that accepts a new tree will have a yard sign installed. The yard sign acts as a visual representation of a new tree and has a QR code that leads directly to the website where you can learn about the importance of the urban forest and request a new tree. The signs will be removed by the City's contractor and returned to the City once the new tree is planted.

Newly planted trees will be watered by the City for 90-days following planting, as necessary. After the 90-day period, a water bag will be installed on the tree. From that point on property owners are responsible for watering. Newly planted trees will also receive a young tree checkup approximately 1-year after planting. This checkup includes light structural pruning, re-staking and tying, if necessary, and an overall health check.

Each street has been designated with a set of species that is included in the Designated Street Tree List. This list can be found below. Information regarding each species can be found at https://selectree.calpoly.edu.
