Tree Removal Notifications
In accordance with the City’s Tree Policies and Guidelines, a written appeal may be made in regard to the removal of a tree within 15 days of the posting date. Appeals must state the grounds for the appeal and may be sent to trees@claremontca.gov.
Our aim at the Community Services Department is to have a thriving, robust urban forest. That is why we always look for all alternatives before choosing tree removal. However, removals are sometimes necessary to protect public safety, first and foremost, and to navigate the many challenges of growing trees in an urban setting.
The City’s goal is to replant all trees that have been removed. However, on some occasions the planting site may be considered non-viable. Some common considerations that limit street tree replanting include sidewalk width, proximity to any existing infrastructure (street lights, traffic lights, stop signs, bus stops, etc.) and conflicts with any underground utilities. Another consideration is proximity to water and/or property owner’s commitment to watering a new tree.
If a planting site is re-plantable and the property owner agrees to water, a tree new tree will be planted. The City’s Reforestation Program runs from November and April of each year, weather permitting. Information on Reforestation can be found here: https://www.claremontca.gov/City-Services/Trees/Reforestation-Plan.
If a planting site is determined to be non-viable, it will be marked as such in the City’s inventory for future planting consideration.
