The City of Claremont strives to maintain a thriving, robust urban forest, and the Community Services Department explores all alternatives before recommending removal of a City tree. Navigating the many challenges of growing trees in an urban setting means that removals are sometimes necessary, especially when in the interest of public safety.
The City’s goal is to replant trees that have been removed whenever and wherever possible. However, some locations may be considered unsuitable for replanting. Some common considerations when determining the viability of a planting site include sidewalk width, proximity to existing infrastructure (streetlights, traffic lights, stop signs, bus stops, etc.), and conflicts with underground utilities. Other considerations are the availability of a water source and/or the property owner’s commitment to watering a new tree.
If a planting site is deemed viable and the property owner agrees to water the tree, a new tree will be planted. The City’s Reforestation Program runs from November to April of each year, weather permitting.
If a planting site is determined to be non-viable, it will be noted as such in the City’s inventory for possible future consideration.
Scheduled Tree Removals will be noticed on the 1st and 16th of the month.
