Water

The City of Claremont does not own, operate, or manage water service or groundwater in Claremont. The management of water in Claremont is coordinated by multiple agencies with oversight by the County and State.

Golden State Water Company, a private company, provides water service to Claremont homes and businesses. Oversight of private water companies' service and rates is the jurisdiction of the California Public Utilities Commission. 

Groundwater in Claremont is the responsibility of Six Basins Watermaster. The Watermaster oversees the pumping of groundwater in the basin according to an adjudicated agreement among water rights holders.

Three Valleys Municipal Water District, located in Claremont, is a wholesale water agency that was established by a vote of the people in 1950.  Three Valleys provides water to 13 member agencies including Golden State Water Company. Three Valleys Municipal Water District is one of the 26 water agencies that makes up the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD).

 

Water Conservation

Permanent Water Restrictions in Claremont

Under the City's Water Conservation Ordinance (Municipal Code Section 18.30060) the following are prohibited at all times in Claremont:

  • Hosing off sidewalks, driveways, and other hardscapes.

  • Washing automobiles with hoses not equipped with a shut-off nozzle.

  • Using non-recirculated water in a fountain or other decorative water feature.

  • Watering lawns in a manner that causes run-off, or within 48 hours after measurable rain.

Water Efficiency Rebates

Claremont Water Efficiency Rebates and Information

Claremont residents and businesses may apply for water conservation rebates for the replacement of turf, energy efficient and low flow appliances, and smart irrigation controllers through a program administered by the Metropolitan Water District and Golden State Water Company. Funding for this program comes from the State and Metropolitan Water District. Information and applications are available from Golden State Water Company

The City of Claremont is not a water agency and does not have access to State grants monies for water programs or incentives.

 

Drought Information

Following several months of storms bringing much-needed snow and rain to California, conditions have dramatically changed for many parts of the State. In response, Governor Newsom has rolled back some drought emergency provisions that are no longer needed while maintaining other measures that support regions and communities still facing water supply challenges.

Effective Sunday, May 14, 2023, Golden State Water Company modified outdoor watering restrictions to allow for watering up to three days per week. Given that water conditions will continue to evolve, customers are encouraged to use water wisely and only use what is needed.

Golden State Water is recommending customers limit outdoor irrigation between the hours of 7:00 pm and 8:00 am per the following schedule:
