The City's Community Services Department has installed new bus shelters, designed by local architect John Bohn, featuring a modern, angular design with splashes of blue, yellow, orange and purple.
The old bus shelters needed to be replaced because they were not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and obstructed sight lines and pedestrian access due to their bulky size.
This new design is narrower, made of perforated metal and a mesh screen while still providing adequate shelter. Architect John Bohn took inspiration from the undulating forms of the San Gabriel foothills, the work of important local artist Karl Benjamin, and the dappled light of coastal oak tree canopies. The project’s color palette recalls the trains of the historic Pacific Electric Railway and the vibrant local flora. Learn more about John Bohn Associates. The concrete pads the shelters sit on has been stained to complement the design.
The City installed three types of shelters—a full shelter design, a mid-shelter design and a smaller “umbrella” design. The umbrella design features a leaf-shaped panel on top that is adjustable, allowing shade at any point during the day.
Trash receptacles and benches will be installed in early January 2025.
The project was funded with dedicated State Transportation funds that may only be spent on bus shelters and bus route infrastructure.
